Sanctuary by Christopher Cole is the excellent sequel to Outbreak (The Dark Days Series.) If you’re looking for a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat teen and young adult, post-apocalyptic thriller then this is your book!
The exciting and astonishing storyline is staggering and unbelievable but undoubtedly, it is the characters in this story that make it so memorable. Sonny is back, albeit with a new name, and so are his friends – his new family. As they arrive at the sanctuary of Fort Gold Rush – a walled city, they meet new friends and make new enemies. For me, Grim is by far the best of all the new people. With the nickname of ‘The Vigilante’ we soon learn he is not a soldier to be messed with. Luckily, for our group of teen heroes, Grim takes a shine to Sonny and takes him under his wing. I find the prospect that Sonny is training to be a super fighter exciting and I’m really looking forward to more of this story-line in book 3.
This is a book of two halves. The first part, which is the arrival at the fort, takes the time to introduce all the new characters and to flesh out the existing ones. Touching on the subjects of bullying and the difference between good and evil, this is certainly a book to invoke good debates, especially as the story firmly shows that between good and bad there is a whole area of gray. The teens soon learn that the world has naturally split people between being either a predator or a protector. There is no doubt which one Sonny and his friends have become. The second-half is action-packed, heart-thumping, edge-of-your-seat and thrilling! Running for their lives, the trainee-teenagers, hike through the forest fighting off both zombies and bandits. The ending is simply attention-grabbing and gripping. Christopher Cole is an amazing story-teller and an excellent writer. His second installment in The Dark Days Series, Sanctuary is an extraordinary story and held me captivated from start to finish!!
Christopher Cole has taken the time to fully fresh-out his characters and to place them in an incredible, gripping and entertaining thriller. All about personality and mentality, this is the very best zombie survival series you’re going to want to read time and again. Can’t wait for the next installment!
