Synopsis:

Joe was eighteen when he saddled up his horse and left the side-hill farm in Tennessee for points west. He started the long trek of finding his brother’s killer. Somewhere out yonder where the long grass grew he would find the mate to the gun which hung low on his hip; the one with the Bluejay engraved on the handle. When he did he knew what would follow. There would be smokin’ guns and a family account would be settled.

Review:

The Bluejay Trail by James McKinney is an exciting western adventure story that readers will revel in. It follows young eighteen year old, Joe, as he sets out to avenge his brother death. He saddles up his horse, and leaves his Tennessee home and heads west. It is a long journey and Joe is determined to find his brother’s murderer. The killer took his brother’s gun after he killed him.  Painted on the handle is a picture of a bluejay. The guns were an identical pair given to Joe and his brother by their father. Joe is searching for the man who has his brother’s gun. He has to confront the gunman’s gang and family members along the way in order to get to his brother’s killer. In doing so, he builds quite a reputation for himself throughout the west.

The Bluejay Trail is a remarkable western read. It is packed with action and filled with adventure. Readers will become fully engaged as the story progresses and becomes increasingly intense. I couldn’t put it down and read it late into the night, turning the pages quickly to keep up with the extremely well thought out storyline. Although there is some violence and loads of bullets flying high in this book, it is a clean read and suitable for all ages.

Filled with action and suspense, The Bluejay Trail is a must read western fiction book. The format and clean narrative is written well with skill and creativity. James McKinney has a talent for writing exciting and entertaining westerns. He has an authentic, clear and concise voice. The book flows well and the interesting characters are fully developed and intriguing. Even the bad guys are fleshed out and engrossing. The descriptive writing is impressive and the narrative between the characters is written superbly. I felt like I was on the scene watching on as the story unfolded. I didn’t see the ending coming, and the plot comes full circle and is complete and satisfying.

For readers that love concrete gritty westerns with a storyline that is brimming with tension, filled with exploits and that is completely original, Artisan Book Reviews highly recommends The Bluejay Trail by James McKinney.
