In a small Austrian town, Krampus Night turns real.

The yearly celebration of Krampusnacht is one of Bad Gastein’s most cherished traditions. Every December, townsfolk dress as the mythical beast, throw parties, and let the town’s children know if they’ve made the monster’s naughty list. And, this year, a group of young cyber-bullies has been particularly bad. Someone, or possibly something, has determined they deserve punishment.

The youngsters start going missing.

A recently turned vampire, who’s come to the idyllic and isolated Austrian Alpine town to contemplate her new existence, puts her own dilemmas aside and sets her mind to rescue the kidnapped kids. Her first faceoff with the kidnapper leaves no question that she’s outmatched. However, with help from an innovative priest and another, more friendly, otherworldly being, she might just save the young teens and defeat a Christmastime monster.

“It is most definitely a very worthy take on the cautionary creature legend, and indeed the best fiction I have read in quite a while. If you like fantasy, horror, YA or simple suspense, you’ll love it; if not, you’ll just like it a lot!” – Matt McAvoy, author of the critically acclaimed “Granjy’s Eyes”

Book review:

For fans of fantasy and scary stories, this pulse racing book is for you!  Krampusnacht by James Drummond is an incredible, nail-biting and thrilling story which I couldn’t put down.  It is a great young adult and teen paranormal – don’t look under the bed – folk tale, a modern day Grimm.

From the first page, as we watch young Simon traipsing through the snow for his clandestine meeting with the six, you will be gripped.  The whole book is fascinating and attention grabbing but the last third of the book I was literally on the edge of my seat with my heart racing!  Superb plot, a Christmas time myth brought to life in a very realistic way.  One night, in the town of Bad Gastein in Austria, there is a loud sound a bit like thunder and then the earth moves.  The next day, a storm arrives, the worst ever recorded in Austrian history.  With the cold and the wind and the quickly deepening snow, something from myths and legends arrives.  Something intent on devouring seven children.  Will newly turned Vampire, Rachel be able to save them?  And who is the fast running man in the forest?

Beautifully wrapped around this traditional hair-raisingly spooky story, are the clever lessons against bullying and the morals of forgiveness. They are simply part of this amazing absorbing story and add extra depth to the characters and storyline.  A Christmas tale full of good cheer and fear.  If you hear the faint tingle of dull bells, the clatter of chains and the snickering of unknown creatures, then I suggest you lock your doors and don’t venture outside until the storm has passed!

James Drummond’s descriptive writing style is skillful and superb. Smooth, and very easy to read, this really is a book of excellent quality.  This is book 4 of a series, but I can say this reads extremely well as a standalone.  I’ve not read any of the others but that did not impinge my read at all.  In fact, now I want to go and read the whole Shadow Tales series by James Drummond!  With wonderful characters, and a brilliant ‘peek through your fingers’ scary plot Krampusnacht (Shadow Tales Book 4) by James Drummond absolutely comes to you highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
